Lambeth Elfrida Rathbone Society was established in 1967. We take our name from Elfrida Rathbone, an educationalist and campaigner, who was one of the first people to believe that people with learning disabilities could learn and develop skills through education and should not be treated as having an illness. There are many charities around the country who in use the name Rathbone to indicate that they carry on Elfrida Rathbone’s philosophy in some way. Although some of these groups have links with each other, we are not part of a national organisation, but are a fully independent charity. Today we are known locally as just ‘Rathbone’. Today, our charity runs a range of service and projects for children, young people and adults with Learning Disabilities and Autism. We also run and continue to develop community services in our locality of West Norwood in conjunction with Lambeth Council’s Cooperative Council programme. Follow the link to our website to see the full extent of our work. The charity is overseen by a Board of Trustees who meet regularly to oversee the work of the employees. We are fully registered with the Charity Commission and as a Not for Profit company with Companies House.
