Our firm mostly practices in four main areas: litigation on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing clients, personal injury, criminal defense, and commercial litigation. We represent deaf and hard of hearing clients in a wide variety of legal matters. Some of these matters include representation of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in significant personal injury litigation. We also represent the deaf and hard of hearing communities in matters ranging from eviction proceedings brought in Housing Court to matters where our clients have been discriminated against at work or in other public settings. GHV Partner Moshe Horn has extensive experience handling criminal defense matters. As a former ADA in the Manhattan D.A.’s office, he has tried dozens of cases. In his work as a criminal defense attorney, Moshe has developed a specialty in defending youthful offenders, situations including alleged drug use, alcohol use, cyberbullying, alleged cheating on exams, accusations of hazing or college sexual misconduct, or Title 9 violations. Moshe is a frequent lecturer and advisor to schools on these topics. We have significant experience in bringing lawsuits on behalf of clients who suffered grave personal injuries due to defective products. We have frequently litigated cases in which our clients were injured due to unsafe construction site conditions, and we have also worked for years on behalf of individuals who have been injured outside of the workplace. Additionally, we have represented clients in a host of matters involving serious motor vehicle accidents. GHV attorneys also have many years of experience litigating medical malpractice lawsuits. Our commercial litigation practice encompasses a broad array of business disputes. The firm litigates commercial cases arising under federal and state statutes, as well as matters involving general principles of contract and business law. Our attorneys are seasoned litigators with extensive experience in federal and state courts and in arbitration and mediation. We are very proud of our commitment to pro bono work. Throughout our careers, we have all committed significant time, energy, and determination to pro bono matters, and we aggressively continue this mission today. Helping someone that needs a lawyer, but who can’t afford one, reminds us of why we became lawyers in the first place. Bruce Gitlin is the founder and chairman of the New York Center for Law and Justice, dedicated to helping the deaf community in legal matters. Bruce is also on the board of numerous other charitable organizations. Moshe Horn has been an adjunct law professor for over 20 years at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law – his alma mater - and is a frequent lecturer in high schools educating teenagers and parent groups on issues confronting teen youth. He also serves on the board of his synagogue and other community groups. Chris Van de Kieft is a U.S. Army veteran who is the chairman of his son’s school chess team, and coaches in Brooklyn’s AYSO soccer program and Precinct 78’s youth baseball program.
