EarthSpark International

www.earthsparkinternational.org

EarthSpark International is a non-profit incubator for companies that can deliver high-quality energy services to under-served communities. EarthSpark pioneered smart metering and controls for energy access microgrids. EarthSpark is now again disrupting widespread beliefs about microgrids by committing to 100% solar+storage grids with high service levels and high reliability. EarthSpark’s dynamic combination of “high-tech” solutions like smart-metering, demand-side management, electric cooking, and distributed energy resources and “no-tech” solutions like participatory governance, targeted energy literacy, and feminist electrification is a key differentiator that supports long-term sustainability and community collaboration. Further, EarthSpark being a non-profit that launches businesses is unique in the sector. The structure enables deep research and iteration to drive vetted solutions to scale. To date EarthSpark has spun-off SparkMeter Inc., a venture-backed smart meter technology company, and Enèji Pwòp S.A., a Haitian clean energy retailer and microgrid operator. SparkMeter now serves electric utilities across 25 countries, and Enèji Pwòp is an established microgrid operator in Haiti. EarthSpark has also built Haiti’s first town-sized, solar-powered smart grid, launched a second in 2019, and secured $9.9M in support from Green Climate Fund for the launch of the next 22 grids.
