NUS Food Science and Technology was first founded in 1999 as a boutique programme within the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science. The first director, Professor Phillip Barlow at that time recruited the first batch of 30 students into the major. Since then, graduates from FST programme has joined the local workforce making tremendous impact to the local foodscape. NUS FST graduates today are still enjoying one of the highest employment rate compared to graduates from other university courses. Since 2020, NUS FST has operate independently as the Department of Food Science and Technology. The inception is timely to reflect our leading role in the discipline and enhanced competitive advantage in the region. Today, NUS FST is directed by Prof Zhou Weibiao and has a total of 7 other faculty members who strive to make NUS FST a center of excellence in food science and technology locally as well as internationally by contributing to high quality research and producing competent and skillful graduates. Our goal is to produce future ready graduates who are versatile and highly qualified to face the ever changing landscape of the food industry in Singapore.
