The issue of establishing the SBMU Functional Neurosurgery Research Center was approved at in 2007, and in 2008, following the approval by the Development Council of the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education, the center was located at SBMU Shohada Tajrish Educational Hospital. The center is collaborating with the research institutes, such as Royan and Stem Cell Technology Research Center in stem cell in order to treat spinal cord diseases and disorders.
