Fondée à Montréal en 1869, la Société Canadienne pour la Prévention de la Cruauté envers les Animaux (maintenant mieux connue sous l’appellation SPCA de Montréal) fut la première organisation de protection des animaux au Canada. À ses débuts, la principale préoccupation de la SPCA était d’améliorer la situation des chevaux de trait. Aujourd’hui, elle est la plus grande société pour la protection des animaux au Québec. La SPCA de Montréal est un organisme à but non lucratif qui dépend presque exclusivement des dons du public pour effectuer son travail.
