TARA, Tanzania Recyclers Association, is a voluntary association of waste pickers and companies working in the recycling and upcycling sectors, collecting and managing recyclable waste materials found on the streets, in offices and in the dumpsites, and selling or processing the waste to earn an income. It aims to prompt collaboration in the recycling sector, based on the assumption that setorial players are stronger together than individually and that a strong recycling sector benefits Tanzania’s waste management and economy as a whole. As Dar es Salaam is a rapidly growing city with insufficient waste management infrastructure and Tanzania is a developing country that needs employment opportunities for its citizens, TARA thrives to support the government shaping policies that combine environmental stewardship with social inclusion in the waste management sector. TARA stands for Zero Waste practices and benchmarks other countries that have had tremendous success integrating waste pickers and recycling companies into the formal economy and heeding their expertise on issues like source waste segregation, organics management, and residual assessments.
