The Union has been voted the Club Mirror UK Student Union of the year in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and received a Gold Award at Best Bar None 2013 and in 2016. GUU organises social affairs for its members, provides value catering and entertainments and generally seeks to enhance the experience of its members during their time at the University of Glasgow and beyond. GUU has six bars, including the famous Beer Bar, a games room, a Billiards Hall, a shop, a Servery and Subway, a Union Cafe and two libraries to cater for the academic needs of its members. GUU is the most successful debating institution in the world, with 5 World University Debating Championships to its name - more than Oxford and Cambridge combined. As a founding member of the Championships in 1981, the Union has hosted this prestigious event 3 times since its inception. GUU has also taken home the John Smith Memorial Mace a record 15 times. Students are eligible to become members for free at any point throughout their University career, entitling you to vote and deepen your involvement with the union. Alumni may become Life Members by applying to the Board of Management. The GUU Board of Management consists of 17 current Glasgow University students, all of whom volunteer their time for the benefit of the members: President - Aslak Ringhus Honorary Secretary - Ailsa Jones Assistant Honorary Secretary - Douglas Jack Convener of Debates - Andrew Muir Convener of Games - Katie Knight Convener of Libraries - Lottie van Grieken Convener of Entertainments - Connor Davidson Present Student Members - Alex Martin, Keri Anderson, Ellen Wilson, Jenna Macfarlane, Francis Webb, Euan MacVicar, Cameron Duck, Skye Brettell, Eilidh Tippen and Imogen Cross.
