The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, in co-operation with the Consulate General in Shanghai and the Consulate General in Guangzhou, promotes the relations between Norway and China. The Embassy covers a wide range of responsibilities, including visits, reporting, promoting economic cooperation and trade, cooperation within environmental protection and development, promoting Norwegian culture, consular work and issuing Norwegian visas to Chinese citizens. Innovation Norway is represented through the Embassy's commercial section. The Embassy has the administrative responsibility for the following provinces; Beijing, Chongqing, Gansu, Guizhou, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan, Tianjin, Xizang, Xinjiang and Yunnan. The Embassy is responsible for Hong Kong and Macau. The Ambassador in Beijing is also accredited to Mongolia. The Embassy compound is situated in the diplomatic area Sanlitun, about 6 km northeast of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It was designed by the Norwegian architect Rolf Ramm Østgaard and completed in 1972. The residence of the Ambassador is also situated in the Embassy compound.
