I believe the secret of getting ahead is to know what is important to you. Are you measuring yourself by society’s criteria or by your own values? I have done both in my life. I have chased power, status and wealth, but I found them not particularly inspirational goals. They are too open-ended – there is always someone with more. More importantly, they are not fulfilling on their own. What does it mean to be powerful unless that power can be harnessed to do something meaningful? It is only by identifying that deeper purpose and organizing your life to pursue it that you can find true success.
