In simplified terms, a flat strip of steel enters a machine and then emerges in the shape desired by the customer The sheet can be bent, folded, stamped and profiled so that it is shaped by traditional techniques into such things as curtain poles, downpipes or shelf brackets. A number of new areas requiring variable shapes can be identified with the new advanced and dynamic 3D roll forming technology. Roll forming is a production method in which profiles are formed when the sheet passes through a series of roll stands that gradually change its shape. There is therefore no reduction rolling, only profile bending. The gradual progress of the forming operation means that roll forming is gentle on the material being worked and that all metallic materials can be shaped, whatever their strength.
