Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta is the local resource for the metro Atlanta community for breast cancer screening, diagnostics and support services. Established in 1991 by a group of volunteers, Komen Atlanta serves 4.7 million people in Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, Coweta, Gwinnett, DeKalb, Clayton, Fayette, Rockdale, Henry, and Newton counties. We work to enable all individuals in these counties to detect and survive breast cancer. This mission is accomplished through providing life-saving breast screenings, diagnostic testing, and treatment support to those who cannot afford these services. Led by Cati Stone, a five year breast cancer survivor, four dedicated staff, and a volunteer board of directors, Komen Atlanta provides more than 12,000 breast health services annually. Within metro Atlanta there are significantly higher breast cancer incidence, death, and late state diagnosis rates when compared to the rest of Georgia and the US in general. Komen Atlanta endeavors to serve individuals throughout all 13 counties of Metro Atlanta because the need is high. We focus on communities that are at the greatest risk for experiencing gaps in breast health services, barriers in access to care, or those that are home to populations most vulnerable to experiencing poor breast health outcomes. Through annual events, including the Race for the Cure and Bubbles & Bling, individual contributions, corporate sponsorships, and local foundation support, Komen Atlanta raises funds to support our mission. Seventy-five percent of all funds raised by Komen Atlanta stay in metro Atlanta to fund breast health programs for the medically underserved. Twenty-five percent of funds raised support the National Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, with much of this research taking place in Atlanta. We are proud to report that since 1991 we have raised more than $41 million in support of our mission.
