“Niramaya” in Sanskrit (an ancient language from the Vedas) means “freedom from illness”. Motivated by an understanding that children learn better when they are healthy, ‘Pratham Mumbai’ began basic health interventions for its Balwadi (Preschool) children in August 1999. As the scope of the health program expanded, this health effort evolved into a separate entity now referred as the “Niramaya Health Foundation” which was formally founded in June 2001. Basically, Started with one agenda of children’s healthcare, Niramaya now has expanded its work in various horizons of healthcare. Since Niramaya’s inception in 2001, the health care activities have broadened beyond child health to women’s health and nutrition to good health for all. Niramaya has also expanded the range of the healthcare activities from curative to preventive and promotive healthcare. In all these years, Niramaya has developed effective and sustainable healthcare programs. Geographically, Niramaya currently works in the urban slums of Mumbai and rural and tribal communities of Maharashtra. Niramaya was also working with various communities in the cities of Pune, Surat and Delhi, and in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Each year Niramaya reaches to more than 10 lakhs population living in slums of Mumbai. VISION Niramaya Health Foundation’s vision is to ensure a disease free childhood for a healthy and responsible adulthood. MISSION To fight for an anemia free childhood in India; and To sensitize adolescents on their reproductive and sexual health. THEMATIC AREAS We have turned our focus towards creating a Strategic Programming Framework within the organization for getting in tune with present day scenarios. With this in mind, we have encapsulated four thematic areas; 1. Women and Child Health and Development 2. Sexual and Reproductive Health Education 3. Nutrition and Sanitation 4. Preventive and curative Health Services
