Lodz Film School (PWSFTViT: Panstwowa Wyzsza Szkola Filmowa, Telewizyjna i Teatralna im. Leona Schillera w Lodzi) was founded on March 8, 1948 in Lodz, Poland and it is the one of the oldest and best-known institutions of higher education in film, tv and media. From the very beginning PWSFTViT trained actors as well as film directors, cinematographers, producers and has had its Film Production Centre in which students work on their practical assignments and diploma projects. Some of the students turned out outstanding directors and creators of the new film waves called "Polish film school": Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Janusz Morgenstern, Kazimierz Kutz, and "cinema of moral disquiet": Krzysztof Kieślowski, Krzysztof Zanussi, Wojciech Marczewski. The school also turned out the creators of Polish art of cinematography: Jerzy Wójcik, Witold Sobociński, Mieczysław Jahoda, Sławomir Idziak, Paweł Edelman and international film artists: Roman Polański, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Jerzy Skolimowski. PWSFTViT currently has four departments: Direction, Cinematography, Film and TV Production, and Acting. The school's training method involved simultaneous mastering of film techniques and technology and broadening of knowledge in the arts as well as integrating practical activities with theoretical classes. Versatility is distinct characteristic of the school. Students had the opportunity to work with leading cinematographers, directors, producers, actors and representatives of other arts and humanities. The school's model of education and the famed alumni are behind the international rank of e.g. Academy Awards, Cannes International Film Festival and Camerimage - The International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography. Since 1983 the school has been the organizer of the School Theatre Festival, and since 1993 it has organized the Mediaschool International Film and Television Schools' Festival.
