Edelstam Institute
www.edelstaminstitute.orgThe Edelstam Insitute of Education for Human Rights and International Affairs is an independent institution whose mission is to conduct research and educate governments worldwide and their diplomats about Human Rights, Responsibility to Protect, and International Affairs. It is named after the Swedish diplomat and Ambassador, Harald Edelstam (1913-1989), who distinguished himself as a diplomat by his professional competence, his bravery and his civic courage in the fight for Human Rights. He was an early proponent and symbol of what today is known as the ”Responsibility to Protect” and his memorable acts continued to save lives during the Second World War in Nazi-occupied Norway and more than 1500 lives during the coup in Chile in 1973. The Edelstam Institute stands for a humanistic view, based on the values and principles that mainly are expressed in the United Nations’ Universal Declaration on Human Rights from 1948, along with the conventions that followed and internationally accepted public law. The Edelstam Institute conducts research and offers educational programs, which shall contribute to develop further tools in order to encourage to solve issues through dialogue, mediation and diplomacy, instead of military intervention, violence and war. It offers specific tools for governments and their diplomats to analyze situations through the means of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration for Human Rights, to prevent crimes and violations of human rights, promote governments to seek for justice when crimes are committed, and peaceful settlement of dispute. The Edelstam Institute’s educational programs offers theory, -practice, and –discussion interaction in order to benefit from the participants’ experience, but also to get a more hands-on knowledge on how to work in times of human crisis, and how diplomacy and the civil society can interact faster when crimes and violations of human rights arise.
