Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids

www.healthyfoodsforhealthykids.org

We are the First State's school garden experts! Our mission is to inspire healthier lives by providing youth with joyful school gardening experiences and opportunities to eat the garden-fresh vegetables they’ve grown. Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) is the only Delaware organization that works with schools to design and implement vegetable gardening programs that engage EVERY child in a school in two “seed-to table” growing seasons each year. Our model makes it possible and practical for schools to integrate vegetable gardening into the school day and academic year, and to strengthen science education while promoting student health. As a result, we currently serve more than 30 schools. Outcome goals for our students include increased agricultural and environmental literacy, enhanced understanding of the importance of vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and better understanding of essential science concepts. Our vision is a vegetable garden in every school, leading to generations of healthy families throughout Delaware. Though we are a small organization, we are well integrated into the community, and belong to nonprofit networks including the Delaware Urban Farm and Food Coalition and the Delaware Food Research Network. As a result of our partnerships with school nutrition programs, we were the only Delaware recipient of the inaugural USDA Farm to School Grant in 2012. Please follow us on social media, or at our website www.healthyfoodsforhealthykids.org, as we continue to grow and expand our program to teach the joys of gardening and healthy foods to youth across the First State!
