Redwood City was incorporated in 1867 with the police department being founded in 1878. An elected Town Marshal provided the first police protection. Years later the position of Town Marshal was changed to Police Chief. Today the Redwood City Police Department has a total of 100 total sworn officers and numerous support staff, and provides law enforcement services within the incorporated areas of Redwood City and Redwood Shores.
