Ushahidi Haiti @ Tufts University
haiti.ushahidi.comUshahidi, meaning “testimony” in Swahili, is a platform developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election fallout at the beginning of 2008. This free and open-source platform is designed for users to crowd-source, aggregate, and map crisis information from multiple sources in near real-time. These sources include text messages (SMS), social media (Twitter, Facebook, blogs), traditional online media, e-mail, radio, and television. Organizations have deployed the Ushahidi platform in multiple contexts around the world, including election monitoring in Afghanistan; disaster response in the Philippines; and the documentation of human rights abuses, crime, and corruption world-wide. Ushahidi provides unique information channel aggregating and processing collected on community level. Ushahidi Haiti is a single deployment of the Ushahidi platform. It is a flexible web platform that will adapt to remain relevant to the evolving situation in Haiti and to the needs of responders on the ground. Initially launched by Patrick Meier and a small group of Fletcher School volunteers, UH@T now represents a global innovative partnership between Ushahidi, Mission 4636, and over 300 trained volunteers.
