GGTL Laboratories Liechtenstein Our Liechtenstein laboratory is situated in Balzers, the most southern locality of this small principality that borders Switzerland and Austria. Being at the other extreme of Switzerland, in the East, the lab is close to Zurich, Austria, Germany and even Italy. Having an agreement with Switzerland since 1923, Liechtenstein has no customs with Switzerland, hence there is free trade and movement between the two countries. The laboratory was founded in 1996 in Liechtenstein out of the simple reason that the founder of this lab, Dr Thomas Hainschwang, was born and lived most of his live in this country. The GGTL Liechtenstein laboratory is also a full-service laboratory offering all gemmological services except for the emerald cleaning and re-oiling services and the diamond re-cutting services. One of the most prominent specialities of GGTL Liechtenstein is diamond and fancy colour diamond testing and melee diamond screening and sorting; the GGTL Liechtenstein laboratory is one of very few laboratories that is capable of efficiently screening melee-sized coloured diamonds of all colours for synthetic diamonds, treated diamonds and imitations. This type of service requires adapted equipment as found at the laboratory and extensive experience in coloured diamond defects and testing, which matches the expertise of Dr Hainschwang. Most of the research work is being done in the Liechtenstein lab and furthermore most of the instrument prototype research, building and testing happens here.
