ecosiSTEMa is driving change to encourage more girls to choose a career in STEM through my work, research and public speaking. After more than a decade of frustration as a high school teacher watching girls drop out of science and maths (STEM) subjects, I commenced my PhD at the University of Adelaide to find out why. I co-developed the SWIFT (Strong Women in Future Technologies) Program which equips girls with the tools for a career in STEM and helps teachers promote careers for girls in technology. In early 2020 I was named one of the Australian Academy of Science STEM Women Changemakers for the work I am doing to improve the rates of young women in STEM education. Support for Individuals As a fully qualified and registered science and maths high school teacher in South Australia I am able to support students of all ages remotely during this time. Parents are often under-resourced and concerned about how their child with cope with learning from home. Setting up a space and routine for your child to learn from home is vital. Additionally many adults are returning to study, often for the first time in years, as they have lost their jobs due to Covid-19. This can be a scary and stressful time but I are here to support you through this transition. Support for Schools Research indicates that the school environment as well as teachers and parents influence the subject and career choices of students. Take advantage of this change to on-line learning due to Covid-19 to ensure your curriculum, pedagogy and resources are equitable to all students.
