EKARI
www.ekarifoundation.orgEKARI is a community-based, nonprofit tackling extreme poverty in Malawi, Africa, supporting education and economic community development. We work to build knowledge and skills within youth and their surrounding communities so they can lift themselves out of extreme poverty. Our Vision: Thriving youth and communities, free to determine their own future. At EKARI, we believe in the power of education to break the cycle of extreme poverty. Every person, at any age, has the right to the knowledge and skills they need to become self-sufficient - whether in a school classroom at 15 learning math or in a garden at 50 receiving agriculture training. EKARI works to propel these ideals forward within the Phalombe District of Malawi. This is a region facing persistent inequality and is among the most difficult places in the world for young people striving for self-sufficiency. We fill a significant gap by implementing a fully-integrated and long-term approach that empowers communities alongside youth, enabling all to move up and out of poverty together. EKARI’s tuition programs ensure students can overcome the burden of high fees and costs of basic necessities through high school and higher education. Building on the tuition programs, EKARI’s student support programs ensure students are equipped to succeed with a range of support outside the classroom. Our community programs are designed to further support EKARI students by elevating the community around them by jumpstarting sustainable livelihoods through our agriculture, adult literacy, and entrepreneurship programs.
