Our Vision | Our Whanau, Our Future Our Mission | Shaping Urban Maori Futures Manukau Urban Maori Authority has been leading a movement for over 30 years, forging and shaping the right sof Maori in urban settings. Standing at the forefront, driven by visionaries and activists, the urban Maori cause has been fought for on the street and contested in court rooms, all the way to the Law Lords of the UK-based Privy Council. MUMA's marae, Nga Whare Waatea has been the rallying point for landmark issues such as the Maori Language Act, Broadcast Amendment Act, the Foreshore and Seabed hikoi, Maori representation on the Auckland Super City Council and the urban Maori challenge to the fisheries settlement. MUMA has also been the host for numerous celebrations including; the 1990 Urban Register concerts, Whanau Ora Day, E TU music celebrations, and the Black Pearl Mana Wahine Awards. Influencing and shaping urban Maori futures is our business and our responsibility. It's all about whanau...whanau is the way urban Maori connect and relate. In the absence of Hapu and Iwi hierarchies urban Maori have established a robust platform to connect and build positive relationships that are configured around whanau. These are based along any of the following linkages; whakapapa ties, political beliefs, religious affiliations, social connections, place of work, street address etc. In the urban context they are all recognised and valued because...we are whanau and whanau are us. This unique status permits us to hold a privileged relationship with whanau. We have meaningful conversations within the homes of our whanau. Our strong and constant presence, our vigilance and advocacy for the rights of whanau and our communities means MUMA is trusted. We place whanau at the core of our business and at the forefront of our strategies. Achieving and fulfilling our vision is our purpose and our legacy.
