Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) is an initiative advocating for over 5,000 women and non-binary professionals of color working in the documentary film industry around the world. Our mission is to bolster the creative and professional success of our members through nourishing their creative brilliance, community building, sharing resources, and enriching our community with the knowledge to sustain ourselves financially. We fight inequality in the film industry by demanding access and visibility in creative and professional environments, and by cutting through oppressive industry structures to advocate for our members. Since its founding in 2015, Brown Girls Doc Mafia has created a vibrant online community, launched the BGDM Member Directory for discovering BIPOC women/non-binary talent, provided over 100K in grants and mentorship, and implemented numerous development programs advocating for members' access, visibility, creativity, growth, sustainability, and power in the documentary film industry.
