As urban design technologists, we believe that the marriage of place and virtual space represents a singular and exhilarating future for human experience. Today communities exist in three dimensions - the tangible, the virtual, and the augmented. When we go into a mall we participate in tangible communities. When we occupy digital environments we engage in virtual communities. We refer to environments that employ both the tangible and virtual as augmented communities. Our studio seeks to maximize the integration of all three types of community. We engage local and distant communities together in real time by combining interactive technology and data responsive infrastructure. We design experiences rather than places - blurring the boundary between different times and places – providing a means for people to inhabit and interact with each other from all corners of the world. At the same time, we make sure that the infrastructures that support communities are smart. Through the deployment of monitor and control systems we ensure increased energy savings, reduced operational costs, bolstered sales, protected environments, safeguarded equipment, and more intelligent security. We expose these systems in responsive environments that redefine how we live and connect in today’s multidimensional global communities.
