Artist Statement My photography is a search for the scattered clues that reveal what is meaningful and often hidden in the daily routines and events of our lives; it is an endeavor to make permanent and accessible that which is fleeting, amorphous, or unrecognized. Digital Disruption Project Statement: The forces of digitization continue to shape the global social landscape, pulling everything into its orbit, altering all forms of art and culture. It is nearly impossible not to be caught up in its force. We click, we swipe, we upload. We are addicted to our screens. The endless streams of ephemeral digital content we produce contributes little, if anything, to cultural memory. We find ourselves suspended in an anxious, indeterminate present that is described by writer and critic Alan Kirby as “a state of trance that takes the world away; a new weightless nowhere of silent autism.” Using urban environments as a backdrop, the photos in this series explore that emotional state of trance, which renders us as dream walkers—alienated beings who are endlessly diverted and distracted. In this state of trance, it has become increasingly difficult to determine where digital life ends, and physical life begins.
