The U.S. Department of Energy has been funding industrial energy assessments for small and medium sized manufacturing firms under the auspices of Industrial Assessment Center program (formerly the Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Center/ Industrial Assessment Center) since 1974. There are 28 accredited nationwide universities funded by the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) program that conduct industrial energy assessments to assist manufacturing companies in improving energy efficiency and increasing productivity at their facilities. One of these centers is located at University of Miami (MIIAC) and was founded by Dr. Shihab Asfour in 2000. MIIAC has conducted over 345 non-regulatory industrial energy assessments saving over $32 million dollars in Florida and Puerto Rico. Recommendations from industrial assessments developed by MIIAC have averaged about $150,000 in potential annual savings for each manufacturer. MIIAc examines and collects data for many systems including HVAC, motor efficiency, combustion systems, compressed air systems, etc. After the site visit, the company receives a detailed report from our center’s findings and recommendations within sixty days. All the information collected during the assessments and the final reports are kept under strict guidelines of confidentiality. MIIAC can provide these services to manufacturing facilities that meet the following criteria: -Manufacturing facilities with Standard Industrial Codes (SIC) beginning with 20-39 - Annual energy bills more than $100,000 (inclusive of all energy and fuel types: electricity, diesel, natural gas, propane, etc.) - Gross annual sales below $100 million Our team consists of PhD candidates, undergraduate students, and Professors who are specialized in energy management as well as facility design and optimization.
