The SCPC was established in 1994, originally as a part of the National Industrial Association. In May 2004 it acquired the legal form of not-for-profit independent organization, civic association. The work of the SCPC was supervised by a steering committee, comprised of representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Economy, an industry association representative, representatives from UNIDO, UNEP, the Slovak-Norwegian Cleaner production programme, members of civil society and other major donors. By that time the country legal framework for NGOs changed (from this moment on, the legal framework forbade authority representatives to take part in organs of not-for-profit organisations). In 2002, based on recommendation of auditors, the legal form of the organisation was changed to Ltd. owned by employees. In 2008, the not-for-profit branch was re-established: PROVENTUS, in legal form of public charity. SCPC being an independent professional organisation cooperates with national and international industries and service providing companies, consultancies, government, academia, NGO-s, and all other interested and involved parties. It is one of the oldest members of international network of National Cleaner Production Centres established by UNIDO and UNEP. Currently, the priority focus for professional consultancy on health and safety at work, fire protection and environmental protection. The target group are mainly industrial companies in Slovakia and abroad.
