Smartswitch Technologies was established in by Neil Gilmore in 2002, in response to the unavailability of marine-quality controls and monitoring equipment for the yacht he had recently purchased. With a background in electronic design, Neil decided to design and manufacture the products he was seeking, and sell them to the marine dealers he had been talking to. After designing the Smartswitch, a controller for monitoring and controlling boat systems, Neil discovered there was a huge market for similar products outside the marine industry. Ezyswitch was established to service the industrial automation and control market. An air conditioning and heat pump company approached Neil to use the Ezyswitch to control its units. However, wi-fi control of air conditioners and heat pumps was complex and required a unique product to be designed and manufactured. The Pebble wi-fi controller was the solution. In 2010, the company became Penguin Electronics Ltd enabling it to market the Smartswitch, Ezyswitch and The Pebble brands. These products are proudly designed and manufactured in New Zealand and exported worldwide.
