Toranj Tuition was established in Kingston upon Hull as a non-profit community organisation designed to stimulate social mobility and facilitate equal opportunities by improving education for children and adults. Our main mission is to provide free educational activities which help to address the educational failures fundamentally linked with poverty. We seek to alleviate the root causes and underlying factors of educational failure, specifically in young people from low income families, something that does not traditionally fall within the remit of any statutory bodies. Our founders felt compelled to begin this project because low educational achievement of local children has long been an unresolved issue in Hull, despite a substantial governmental effort and an influx in allocated resources targeted at alleviating the problem. Through close relationships with local ethnic communities, Toranj Tuition also provides tuition for adult learners. We work with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who have recently arrived in Hull, as well as long-term residents.
