Alliance Française de Manchester
www.afmanchester.orgThe Alliance Française de Manchester is a French cultural and language centre in the heart of Manchester, which offers an immersive experience and a rich cultural programme. Based on Portland Street, the Alliance has been teaching French to the people of Manchester for over 20 years. From Beginner to Advanced levels, and from group courses, to exam preparation, to tailor-made tuition, to distance learning, there are classes to suit many different learners. The Alliance is open all year round, and is also a test centre for official French-language exams, including the DELF/DALF and the TEF exams. A not-for-profit organisation that is open to all, the AFM has a lending library, with a large collection of DVDs and books in French and English, dedicated sections for literature and cultural topics, and a selection of language-learning resources, including graded readers and self-study guides, as well as subscriptions to a range of French magazines and newspapers. Alongside the language classes, exams and the library, there is a programme of mostly free cultural events celebrating Francophone and French culture, featuring recurring meetings such as a monthly book club and fortnightly ciné-club, and one-off events like expert speakers, performances, tastings or guided trips to France. There is always an exhibition on display which is open to the general public, sometimes a celebration of an artist or a poet, sometimes historical or cultural storyboards, or new artwork, paintings, or photography. The Alliance Française de Manchester is part of an international network of Alliances Françaises headquartered in Paris, with over 800 institutions based on 5 continents in 132 countries.
