Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF)

Local Giving for Local Need HIWCF supports the most deprived communities across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, by building funds on behalf of our donors in order to provide a grant making service for our local charitable sector. Why Hampshire & Isle of Wight? With a population of 1.8 million, Hampshire is the UK’s 3rd largest shire county, but its relative prosperity hides real social issues and areas of deprivation: • 936,000 are not in good health suffering from depression, diabetes, smoking or drinking over the safe level of alcohol (Vital Signs 2015) • Hampshire & Isle of Wight have 44 areas in the 10% most deprived areas in the UK, and 81 areas in the 20% most deprived (HCC, IMD 2019) • There are 134 areas with income deprivation affecting children (over 11% of the county) • Drug offences in Winchester and Southampton are worse than the national average • Hospital admissions for alcohol issues are 50% higher in Rushmoor & Portsmouth compared to the rest of Hampshire • Southampton and Portsmouth have the highest rate of 16-18 year old NEETS (Not in education, employment or training) in the UK, similar to deprived areas of the North-East • Isle of Wight has fallen 17 places in multiple deprivation since 2010, with 13 areas in the worst 20% of the UK, and 2 in the 10% most deprived HIWCF has achieved much across Hampshire & Isle of Wight, with £14 million in grants distributed; and now manages over £15 million in endowment funds set-up for individuals, families and companies, as legacies, in memory of loved ones, & those wanting to put something back into their county, city, village or a specific local cause. HIWCF work in partnership with the Big Lottery and government for whom we act as trusted local grant-maker. Our ‘Local Giving for Local Need’ focuses on smaller, lesser known community & voluntary groups working on the front line in our communities, where small amounts make a real difference.
