By the end of the First World War, there were several thousand Lithuanians in the Caucasus and they were facing serious challenges. It became necessary to gather information about them and produce identification documents. Due to this, on 30 August 1918, at the request of the Council of Lithuanians in Caucasus, the Representation of Lithuania to Transcaucasia was opened. Pranas Dailide became the first Representative of Lithuania to Transcaucasia. The mission was forced to work in quite difficult conditions and in 1921, still young diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Georgia ceased due to Soviet occupation of Georgia. On 27 August, 1991, Georgia officially recognized the independence of Lithuania. Diplomatic relations between two nations was established on 16 September, 1994. In 2000-2001, Vytautas Plečkaitis served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia (based in Ukraine). Embassy of Lithuania to Georgia was opened in Tbilisi on 1 July 2004.
