KHOA: Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency

www.khoa.go.kr

The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) was first established as a Hydrographic Division under the Operations Department of the Republic of Korea Navy in 1949, and now falls under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. From hydrographic surveying, ocean observation, nautical cartography to ocean forecast, our products and services support the safety of navigation and marine activities of the public. In order to monitor ocean phenomena in real-time and collect ocean data, we run the Korea Ocean Observing Network in Korean waters (www.khoa.go.kr/koofs/eng). We survey coastlines and bathymetry regularly in order to update nautical charts as appropriate. Also by running the ocean forecast system, we provide prompt and accurate forecast information on tides, tidal and rip currents. We have been a member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) since 1957 and recently became a member of the IHO Council. We are leading the next-generation ENC technology and are actively involved in furthering IHO S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model and e-Navigation. We were designated as the Training, Research and Development Centre by the IHO East Asia Hydrographic Commission in 2013 and are heavily engaged in capacity building activities for other countries by holding many training programmes.
