The Shire of Wiluna
www.wiluna.wa.gov.auThe Shire of Wiluna is located in the Mid-West region of Western Australia, about 950 kilometres northeast of Perth. The Shire covers an area of 182,155 square kilometres. Historically, gold mining in the area caused the town to thrive and prosper. At its peak, the town had a regular railway service to Perth, four hotels and many other amenities and facilities. These days the shire is predominantly mining and pastoral land with a population of around 742 plus a large proportion in mining villages, which are run mainly on a fly-in fly-out basis. The Shire of Wiluna is a vast area of low rainfall and extreme temperatures with beautiful rock formations. The Shire of Wiluna offers a range of services to residents including the operation of a local swimming pool and gymnasium, library, aerodrome, Tjukurba Art Gallery and the Canning-Gunbarrel Discovery Centre, emergency planning and recovery, private works, rubbish collection, strategic planning, pet registration, public health and maintenance of a network of approximately 1,970 kilometres of local streets and roads, amongst other things, including advocacy on behalf of the district and its community to the other levels of government and their agencies. Made up of 7 elected Councillors, the Council employs the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who manages the operations of the organisation and implements and administers Council’s decisions. The Shire is currently in an expansion phase.
