Editorial Nascimento

Editorial Nascimento was one of the most important publishing houses in 20th century Latin America, celebrating its centenary in 2017. Editorial Nascimento began its publishing activity in 1917, driven by its owner Carlos George-Nascimento, who inheritated the bookshop from his uncle Juan Nascimento, original founder of the bookshop. This young Portuguese man arrived in Chile in 1905, and was wholly unfamiliar with the world of literature. However, he strongly believed in his desire to promote the national literary creation process and hence the great talent of Chileans authors. In 1923, he published the first edition of Gabriela Mistral’s “Desolacion” and Pablo Neruda’s “Crepusculario”. From 2014 an ever growing enthusiasm around the figure and the life of Carlos George-Nascimento has been taking place. Today Nascimento proposes a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to knowledge, not just from a utilitarian and practical viewpoint, but also from something much simpler and much more empowering: the love of knowledge, and its ethical use. Nascimento is not only proposing the best in literature, past and present, but also presents across the arts and culture forms, from the bookshelf to the stage, from the stage to the design board and there on.
