David Neil Berkwitz joined Newsweek magazine in December 1988 and was a Contributing Photographer for the magazine based in New York until 2001. David is a freelance Photojournalist living in New York City. His assignments have led him to photograph, and witness events that have changed the make-up of the world today. David's other assignments have included covering Nelson Mandela and the some times violent elections in South Africa (May 1994), the Bosnia conflict (1996), and the elections in Taiwan. In 1997 he covered the Hong Kong Hangover to China, Princess Diana’s and Mother Teresa funerals. He was in Indonesia for the fall of President Suharto. He traveled with President Clinton on his historic trip to China and the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. David has also done portraits of people as diverse as photographer Alfred Eisenstadt, Opera star Beverly Sills, 1960’s icon Timothy Leary, The Daili Lama, noted historian Arthur Schlesinger, and comic actor Dana Carvey, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, actor Gabriel Byrne, actress Salma Hayek, and Nobel Winner Elie Weisel. His photographs have been featured in major US. and foreign publications. He has photographed 5 books for Sports Illustrated In 1990, he was asked to contribute to the first book published on the Tiananmen Square student uprising and massacre.David's work is currently on display with the Here is New York 9/11 gallery. His work has appeared at the Aperture and the Leica Galleries in New York City.
