The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre

www.klpac.org

klpac was established in 2005 as Malaysia's only fully-integrated arts center with end-to-end facilities dedicated to the advancement of the performing arts in Malaysia. The Centre’s 7,614 sq metres of space nestled in a lush 35-acre park just a stone's throw from KL City Centre houses facilities which include a 504-seater proscenium theatre, a 200-seater experimental black box theatre, a 100-seater indicine for indie film screenings and smaller shows, an Academy with 9 studios, a set construction workshop as well as a café and a bar. Its building is over 100 years old. Starting as a wood-crafting workshop and sawmill, it then became part of the iconic Sentul Parks, one of the region's most important railway depot and workshop. It was converted into a make-shift golf clubhouse in the late 1960s and was in use until the early 1990s. The Centre's design will please conservationists as the external facade of the former train depot built was preserved. A modern four-story glass and steel structure has been incorporated into the old structure to create a perfect marriage of old and new. Every year, it welcomes 60,000 - 80,000 visitors to its Centre. Besides renting out its venue to arts groups and corporates, it also presents a full program throughout the year ranging from concerts and plays to dance productions and film screenings. Besides that, its Academy also runs arts-related courses as well as conducts outreach for the underprivileged. klpac is committed to developing local talent and content. Many of its programmes and platforms are geared towards providing opportunities to young talents as well as driving new content creation. It houses three community orchestras - klpac Orchestra, klpac String Orchestra, and klpac Symphonic Band as well as an artist residency program with five full-time individuals. It also runs an annual Theatre for Young People (T4YP) program.
