In the year of 1869, Great Britain’s Commissioners of Patents granted 204 patents to the Dominion of Canada. The fifth patent on that list was the following: "A certain new and useful art of distilling whiskey by means of which a great increase in quantity is obtained from a given quantity of grain." THUS, our name for Patent 5. Patent 5 Distillery is located in the Exchange District of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the Dominion Express building, built in 1903. This building originally housed the horses of the Canadian Northern Cartage and Express Operations of both railroads. The building was designed by the same architectural company that designed Union Station in Winnipeg and Grand Central Station in New York City.
