The city of Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905 and is home to more than 594,000 residents. The largest city in Nevada, Las Vegas is governed by Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and six city council members. City Manager Jorge Cervantes, who was appointed by the city council, oversees administrative duties and the city’s more than 3,000 employees. Covering 133 square miles, the city of Las Vegas is building a world-class destination to showcase the best in arts, culture, entertainment and medicine by expanding the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas with projects like the World Market Center and Symphony Park. To create and encourage new development and redevelopment throughout the city, work is being done to increase and diversify the city’s economy and create jobs through business attraction, retention and expansion programs. Beyond the glitz and glamour, there is another Las Vegas for residents that is vibrant, affordable, economically and ethnically diverse and progressive where citizens feel safe, enjoy their neighborhoods and can access their city government. The city offers more than 85 beautiful parks, in addition to 10 public golf courses and 12 swimming pools for residents and visitors alike. The city also continues to make strides towards becoming one of the most sustainable cities in the world, focusing efforts on conserving water and energy, recycling and building city facilities to standards that have the least impact on the environment.
