WonderCooks is a Washington, DC-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that teaches Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math (STEAM) and entrepreneurial skills to teens through the wonders of cooking. From the founder and Chief Education Officer, Julian Gudger: "One of the problems that I hope to address with WonderCooks is the disconnect for so many young people between what they learn in school and how it will practically serve them later in life. I know first hand the power of education to expand minds and change trajectories. I also know that sit-n-get education is not for everyone and many students need a more hands-on approach to learning. The academic disciplines involved in cooking (and any technical career really) are more easily revealed while, well, cooking." WonderCooks is rolling out in three phases. Phase 1 will be a Saturday Day Camp that will consist of three sessions per month beginning in March/April 2017. Phase 2 will be two- to three-week Summer Camp sessions July-August 2017. Phase 3 will be an After-School Program at various locations throughout Washington, DC during the 2017-18 School Year. A long-term goal, in two to three years, is a stand-alone building with a fully embedded curriculum for secondary students. We are always in search of donors as well as volunteers to asset with capacity building, administrative duties, and instruction (trained cooks or educators only). Please contact us at wondercooksorg@gmail.com.
