Co-creation is a form of collaborative creativity, which uses design thinking, tools and process to give stakeholders a voice and a sense of joint ownership in a project, issue or opportunity. A facilitated process, co-creation thrives on fantasy, play and creativity. I stage the relevant setting, write the script, facilitate and record the process that enables creative co-creation workshops to yield uniquely innovative and tangible outcomes. Most of us will come to the table with our own disciplinary tools, methods and mindsets, yet participation from people across many disciplines is necessary. It is therefore important that everyone participating in co-creation uses a common language. In my workshops this is the language of drawing. I capture, develop and translate what you are saying into simple illustrated concepts. My brand of illustration is borne out of experience in visually communicating and summarising complex narratives into powerful images. Articulating creation into distinctly structured stages is not contrary to the creative act. A creative process possesses structure. While it may wander, it is a hugely purposeful and intense mission. That intensity of thought and reasoning needs to be maintained alive throughout the process. When doing so, it is best to let development take place in bursts, broken up by periods of pause, reflection and discussion. I have developed a technique and storyline as an aid to communicating the key features of the creative process to collaborators, stakeholders and students over many years practising as architect. I have found that the combination of carefully chosen words and drawings very effective in making the point in a concise yet light-hearted way.
