The mission of the Wichita Family Crisis Center is to eliminate domestic violence in our community by supporting survivors through shelter, education, and advocacy. Formerly known as the YWCA Wichita, the Wichita Family Crisis Center is a private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation that began operations in 1907 as a chartered member of the YWCA USA. The first residence was established for single women who were traveling or staying away from home; women entering the workforce were provided with employment aide; and a lunchroom was opened for working women that provided an economical and well-balanced meal. The organization opened the Women’s Crisis Center, Wichita’s first emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence, in August 1976 with the primary goal to empower, strengthen and stabilize families impacted by domestic violence. In 2016, the organization officially changed its name to the Wichita Family Crisis Center to better reflect its local mission. The Wichita Family Crisis Center has an annual operating budget just over $1 million and offers services for more than 1,600 individuals who are fleeing domestic violence in Sedgwick County, Kansas each year.
