Animal Therapies Ltd (ATL) is a National Health Promotion Charity registered with the ACNC with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) endorsement. Our aim is to advance the understanding, acceptance & accessibility of animal-assisted services for those in need. Offering an impartial lens, we create linkages, partnerships and joint initiatives between recipients, the private, public, education and community sectors. The Australian burden of mental health conditions is significant, and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While room-based treatment options exist for many, low rates of treatment adherence, tolerability and acceptability hinder clinician’s ability to reduce the devastating impacts mental health conditions have on individuals, society and the economy. Moreover, for individuals with complex mental health profiles, such as those who have experienced traumatic events, traditional talking therapy can be intolerable or distressing. Animal-Assisted Services have grown out of this need for improved treatment acceptability and as a viable alternative to traditional room-based help. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in involving animals as part of therapies for mental health condition. Evidence-based research supporting the use of these therapies has begun to increase in parallel. The animal-assisted services sector is made up of a range of different professionals who have animals working alongside them as a key part of their service delivery. The type of service being delivered depends on the qualification of the person delivering it.
