Coyotes are an intelligent, adaptive species. While many other animals have experienced diminished ranges, coyotes have expanded their range across North America. Part of the reason for this expansion is that coyotes are able to live in a wide variety of habitats, including our own backyards. We ask that our community report any and all coyote sightings in the Portland metropolitan area. These reports help us learn more about how humans and coyotes interact in urban environments. Who are we? We are a group of researchers at the Geography Department at Portland State University working in collaboration with Portland Audubon. We are interested in understanding the relationship between humans and coyotes in the urban environment. We analyze and present the coyote sightings you report. Who can participate? Anyone! We encourage citizen scientists of all ages. A group of second graders from Alameda Elementary School were the first group of citizen scientists to collect data for this project. How can I get more involved? Your observations are the most important part of this project! The involvement of the community is crucial to the development of our knowledge about coyotes in the city.
