FoodFlow ZA

www.foodflowza.com

With many South Africans already living below the breadline, the sudden lack of income caused by the COVID-19 national lockdown has caused a staggering number of people to no longer be able to afford to feed themselves and their families. At the same time our local farms are still growing food, but many restaurants, hotels and markets they deliver to are closed. We wanted to collaborate in shifting the food flow and get the produce to those who need it most during lockdown. Donors sponsor harvest bags which Food Flow purchases directly from small-scale farmers who deliver to targeted feeding sites in communities facing food insecurity. This model supports food livelihoods, enabling farmers to sustainably feed their communities in this time of increased need. Food Flow acts as a stopgap, stepping in to temporarily replace clients lost due to COVID-19 and financially sustain the food livelihoods of small-scale farmers and producers until their original clients are back and business can return to usual. In the first month since launching, we raised more than a million rand through individual sponsorship of harvest bags. To date, six weeks since launch, 6,796 harvest bags have been distributed to more than 25 communities and R 809,537 has been paid out to small scale food producers benefiting more than 250 individual farmers. We work primarily in the Cape Metro and Winelands areas but have expanded into the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.
