The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario was founded on February 15, 1995. It monitored the government's compliance with the Environmental Bill of Rights, and reported on the government's work in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in achieving greater energy conservation in Ontario. Effective April 1, 2019, the ECO became part of the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario. This change occurred under Schedule 15 of the Restoring Trust, Transparency and Accountability Act, 2018.
