Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Finland

www.aamusaatio.fi

Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation finances medical development of childhood cancer treatment in order to enable usage of the newest and most effective treatment protocols of pediatric cancers. Cancer is the second common cause of death among children in the developed countries. There are ca. 150 new diagnoses of childhood cancer in Finland each year. This means that nearly every other day one child faces cancer and life of the child and near relatives changes in an extreme way. Medical development of childhood cancer treatment has been a success during past 30 years. Yet in 1980’s only one child out of four survived. Today three children out of four face the adulthood. Previously cancer treatment protocols could be utilized without joining a research group. Today according to the different regulations on national and international level this is not possible anymore. Participating in a research group is very expensive due to e.g. extra laboratory costs, biobank fees, salaries of research nurses, publication and communication expenses. Main problem in Finland is that work related to protocols is neither purely clinical nor scientific. It is not possible to find a source for economical support from the existing scientific foundations. This contradictory problem is about to jeopardize the excellent high standard of Finnish paediatric cancer treatment. In order to solve the faced problem the Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation has been established.
