Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association

www.zwla.co.zw

Overview: Operating for nearly 20 years, the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) is a membership organization of female Zimbabwean lawyers engaged in the pursuit of a gender equitable justice system, free of discriminatory laws, policies, and practices. ZWLA provides legal representation to indigent women in court, lobbies and advocates for gender equitable legal reforms, and educates women on how to make informed choices and defend their legal rights. Impact: • The legal aid program for indigent women and children has helped thousands of women obtain maintenance orders to care for children, secure protection orders in cases of domestic violence, claim disputed property upon the death of a spouse, and obtain divorces. • ZWLA was instrumental in advocating for and gaining passage of Zimbabwe's major women's rights legislation, including new inheritance laws, the Sexual Offenses Act, and the Domestic Violence Act. • ZWLA has been a key player in efforts for constitutional reform in Zimbabwe, to ensure that issues of gender rights are not ignored as the country endeavors towards political stability. • Hundreds of traditional leaders, judges, faith based organizations, police, and other NGOs have been trained on gender law issues by ZWLA lawyers and ZWLA trained community peer educators.
