Santa Shoebox Project
www.santashoebox.org.zaTRADITIONAL SANTA SHOEBOX - Since 2006, 1 017 741 Shoeboxes have reached underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia. Santa Shoebox donors choose their beneficiaries by name, age and gender and are given each child’s clothing size. Using the SSB App, donors are able to track their Shoebox from the moment it’s pledged to the magical moment it’s handed to the child. Every Santa Shoebox must contain all 8 specified items, chosen with the underprivileged child at heart. These are a toothbrush, toothpaste, facecloth, soap, sweets, school supplies, a toy and an outfit of clothing – all new, unused and age-appropriate. Every Shoebox is checked upon drop off to ensure compliance and to protect the safety of the children. VIRTUAL SANTA SHOEBOX - These are purchased online by donors – the Generic is available all year round, while the Personalised version is available from Mandela Day onward. The VSS meets the need of donors who live far from drop-off points and are delivered to children in far-flung rural areas. Components are chosen by the donor on the SSB website and the Shoeboxes are packed by the SSB Team. A Virtual Santa Shoebox contains all 8 specified items as well as additional items such as a lunchbox and books, and costs R450.00 plus an optional delivery fee of R30.00. SSB LEGACY - All operating costs of the Santa Shoebox Project are covered by its main corporate sponsors. As part of the Project’s March to A Million drive, for 4-years all privately donated funds have been accruing under the Legacy fund. In 2020 a portion of these funds was allocated to COVID relief, enabling the Project to support a number of other NPOs. In addition, a créche was built in the Loskop District of rural KZN. Thus far in 2021 all 25 ECDs in Samora Machel have received a reading hub, the caregivers have received anti-bullying training and will be receiving training in the Reggio Emilia approach to preschool and primary education.
