The town was incorporated in 1873 and operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The Town Board of Commissioners consists of a mayor and six commissioners. The Town has 180 plus employees working in six departments: Administration/Finance, Engineering, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Planning, and Police. In addition, the town works closely with the volunteer fire department (Huntersville Fire), the regional economic development agency (Lake Norman Economic Development), and two enterprise funded organizations (Electricities and Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics).
